CSM-Tier2

Introduction

The existence of a Tier-2 centre in Spain will provide the Spanish CMS Physics Community with an optimal access to the data and analysis facilities and will properly capitalize the resources invested by the Spanish Institutions in this experiment. This aspect already has been proven on a smaller scale within the Computing, Software and Analysis 2006 challenge where all the CMS Spanish Physicists have been able to access all the needed resources. Moreover, it will provide the resources needed to contribute with the Spanish fraction of simulation needed to develop the different analysis. This Tier-2 would be the main access point and reference centre for all the analysis tasks carried out by the physicist in our country. The Tier-2 for CMS has to be fully operational in 2009 when the first collisions are expected in LHC with non negligible luminosity. Afterward their resources have to increase according with the LHC luminosity roadmap established.

The coordinate effort of the two centres involved in this request, IFCA and CIEMAT, together with the addition of material and human own resources, will ease the construction and operation of a Tier-2 with a dimension and quality of services sufficient to considered as such and probably with a great importance towards the experiment. These two laboratories have been already collaborating together in other project within CMS experiment and, together with other Spanish Groups, in computing issues in the LCG-ES project. We believe that a close collaboration between both institutions will provide the appropriate synergy to build and maintain a Tier-2 centre fulfilling largely the minimal requirements of resources and quality of services set by LCG project and CMS experiment.

IFCA Participation

IFCA, like a part of the CMS Tier-2 center in Spain, participates in the following workpackages:
  • INFRA: Instalation and operation of a computing grid infrastructure
  • MCPROD: Management of the Monte Carlo production.
  • SERVANA: Service of data analisys for users and groups.
  • CALIB: Calibration data processing.
  • COORD: Coordination, in particular with CMS and LCG projects environment, with other infrastructure computing centers (Tier-0/CERN, Tier-1, in particular with PIC in Spain, Tier-2 centers in Spain) and network (RedIRIS), with the user comunity, and with the local environment (informatic services IFCA-CIEMAT).
